WHY DRINKING MILK SHOULD BE DONE WITH CAUTION –
Did you know that the culture of drinking milk started in Central Europe more than 7500 years ago? A study by University College London scientists found that dairy farming communities in the region used milk as a source of vitamin D to make up for lack of natural sunshine.
But while milk has many benefits – among them, better bone health in children – it comes with its fair share of negatives highlighted below:
#1. Milk causes acne
A study whose findings were published in the influential Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that there is an association between consumption of dairy products and acne. As a result, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises acne patients to consider limiting their dairy intake – mainly skimmed milk.
#2. Milk can cause bloating
Research suggests that as we age, our bodies get worse at processing lactose, with some people being more prone to lactose intolerance. If you find yourself feeling bloated after taking an ice-cream cone, you could be suffering from this condition.
#3. Skimmed milk can make you fat
Although milk is high in saturated fat (containing 5 grams per cup) studies show you have greater chance of gaining weight from taking skimmed milk compared to fattier milk.
#4. Milk doesn’t necessarily protect your bones
Some studies suggest that too much calcium, especially in the absence of vitamin D, can weaken the bones, exposing us to the risk of hip fractures.
